Rules and Norms

Rules define how to play a game.

A norm could then be described as the group’s assumption that rules describe how to score in the game and thus how to win it.

This assumption appears because scores allow us to compare individual performances and create an easy assumption of what the game is played for.

What is forgotten is that the score is a simplification of the performance necessary to achieve that score. But also, it focuses us on the result and thus the future.

What is lost in this process is that rules don’t provide any indication allowing us to interpret why the game is being played. And it’s worth noting that it is our choice of why we play the game that allows us to enjoy the game while we are at it.
