Competing for attention

When people don’t know you, receiving attention may seem to be a challenge.

When people know you, they’ve put you into a stereotype and will expect that whatever you share fits that idea of you they have.

Forgetting to differentiate between the two leads to spending a lot of energy with little return on your investment.

The people who don’t know you will start to learn to know you by chance or through the determined efforts you’ll make to spread the word. You’ve got to help them find you. It’s only then, that they will become curious about whatever it is you want to share with them. What they are interested in, is in finding something that surprises them, that has a way of describing things they’ve not seen elsewhere, or that is, in some manner new and interesting to them.

The people who know you, don’t need all of that introduction. They come to you because of the consistency you’ve shown, because of the expertise they experienced, or because of the relationship you’ve established. They are interested in what you do and share. What they want, is that you continue what you do.

You will not be able to satisfy both groups in the same manner.
