Sometimes people believe that they’ve made themselves vulnerable.
The only way this can happen is by assuming that one isn’t vulnerable and can change this state.
But being human also means being vulnerable. It’s a fact that cannot be changed.
However, as this possibility is frightening to most human beings, they address it by developing as many defense mechanisms as they feel needed. Activating such defense mechanisms creates the sense that one can control one’s vulnerability.
But the only reason that establishes a logical explanation why defense mechanisms are needed is the knowledge of one’s vulnerability. Consequently, one can assert that they are being activated to prevent the feeling of vulnerability. These feelings describe our relationship with the vulnerability we are experiencing.
As long as this happens within our conscious mind, these defense mechanisms will be helpful to us. They keep boundaries active that serve our sense of security and keep us within our ability to think clearly.
This ability to think clearly enables us to experiment and thus let go of some defense mechanisms. It’s an exploration of the protection and security we are used to and may want to let go of.
The awareness that such experiments are possible enables us to adapt to new environments. It also is how we develop our maturity.
