The whole and its parts

The whole & its parts

Transforming the past

When decisions are made, people often want them to be the right decision.

This desire can have quite an impact on future decisions.

It can make it hard to let go of that previous decision and invite all future decisions to confirm that past decision. This happens for example by denying or reinterpreting new information to confirm the old decision. Or, if the information is acknowledged, the assumption becomes that one hasn’t tried hard enough to make good use of the possibilities one saw then.

It transforms a decision that most certainly was made with the given knowledge of the past situation and thus might not have had all the relevant information available today, into one that is about one’s ego.

By identifying oneself with that decision, it becomes a question of identity, status, reputation, and self-worth. It has nothing to do anymore with the reason that decision was made.
