The discipline of freedom

Something I’ve been observing with myself as well as with others is the challenge of having time and a multitude of choices.

The more time there is and the more choices there are, the more freedom we seem to have. But that’s when the problems start. Time needs to be structured, choices need to be made, and it all quickly become overwhelming especially if one becomes attached to the expected result.

It paradoxically leads to feeling almost imprisoned in one’s freedom. It’s the expectations that come with it. We live in a society expecting us to make great things happen with that freedom.

The discipline freedom asks for is to know what the things are one can get away with and let them go undone.

It’s not about reaching other people’s expectations; it is about doing what you like in such a way that you can be proud or happy with what you’ve achieved.

It is about knowing and following your definition of success.
