The whole and its parts

The whole & its parts

The focus of our attention

When setting out from one place to get to another, we set ourselves an objective. It defines a starting point and an endpoint.

Our attention can be focused on where we are, the place we seek to reach, or where we come from. Before setting out on the journey, we might also have been concerned with the conditions contributing to making our journey as safe as possible to prepare ourselves.

Having reviewed all of this, the question becomes what to focus our attention on.

It may make sense to pay attention to where we come from as it provides us with information on our experience until now. It may make sense to pay attention to where we want to go, as it helps us stay aligned with the direction we engaged ourselves in.

However, I’d assert that the most valuable use of our attention is by focusing on where we are as it doesn’t prevent us from keeping in mind where we come from and where we want to go to.

The least valuable investment of our attention, however, is worrying if or how we’ll make it. Once the choice to set out has been made, once we’ve made the leap of faith it makes no sense to give it our attention anymore.

Where we are will tell us enough about the next step enabling us to know if something prevents us from making it. Until then we can focus on where we are and how it enables the next step.

Easier said than done.
