Inventing risks

Danger exists or doesn’t exist. It’s in the eye of the beholder. And sometimes also invisible to it.

Risk on the other hand doesn’t exist. It’s a concept. It’s the effort to make danger measurable.

However, we’ve gotten so used to it, that we’ll take it for granted that something like risk can be determined.

This isn’t to say that it’s wrong. It’s an effort to transform danger into something more manageable than a yes or no answer. It’s the hope to feel safer when engaging in anything that might otherwise feel like a plain unknown.

It’s subjective.

While the measurement might be quite accurate, it is based on a choice. Whatever is used to measure the danger will only use those criteria that someone assumed to be a good enough description of that danger.
