The whole and its parts

The whole & its parts

The steering wheel

One’s idea of leadership will often be based on the idea that leaders have the steering wheel in their hands. That is, they are seen as the ones responsible for making “it” happen. But they are also seen as the ones who are free to shape the outcome and the way it is being achieved.

But in a car, there is only one steering wheel. The other places are there for others to join. That is if they are willing to let someone else have the steering wheel. It’s a reminder that most leaders don’t have a steering wheel. It doesn’t mean that they don’t have any impact. The contrary is true. Would they go missing, the others in the system would notice.

Understanding one’s relationship with the steering wheel can be liberating as well as frustrating.

That’s when it becomes a choice.
