The whole and its parts

Leadership and legacy

The way we see today’s decisions is rarely how we’ll see them tomorrow.

Decisions always will be part of the learning process. The best ones are made with all the data available at that moment, towards a goal that is shared and based on a clear ethic.

What follows the decision is best described with the story of a farmer in ancient China. When others sympathized with his good or bad luck, he always answered “Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?”

Looking at the way Valéry Giscard d’Estaing shaped France during his presidency, how it was perceived while he was president, and how it is perceived now tells a story of leadership.

How a person is perceived, how people struggle with the change they implement only shapes today.

Tomorrow is a different story.

The question leaders may ask themselves then becomes how much they crave for today’s recognition.

Leading is the ability to shape and be followed.
